The "Camping du Gouffre" is lined by the "Rivière du Gouffre" River, one of the nice Salmon River of Québec Province.
Located in the Charlevoix County, the "Rivière du Gouffre" originates from the "Lac du Coeur" lake, at 822,96 meters of altitude (2715 feet). It flows over 71 km (44 miles), from North to South, in a very meandering way, and finaly flows in the St-Lawrence River at Baie-Saint-Paul.

It drains over 1 010 square km of territory where we find 185 lakes and 35 tributaries of wich we mainly find the Rivers "Du Gouffre Nord-Ouest", "De la Mare", "Du Gouffre Sud-Ouest" Rivers and "Des Îlots".

On its way, we discover two valleys: the Du Gouffre valley that spreads from Saint-Urbain down to the St-Lawrence River. The second is found in the Notre-Dame-des-Monts area.

By the way, the "Rivière du Gouffre" has been the scene of a Pearled Oyster collect (Fresh Water Mussels) circa 1909.

On Marsh 20 1979, around fourty people of Charlevoix created "l'Association de conservation de la Vallée du Gouffre (ACVG)" (The Society for the Conservation of the Vallée du Gouffre), with the goal of bringing the "Rivière du Gouffre" to be one of the nicest Salmon River of Québec Province.

This srping of 1979, 100 salmon pits where listed in the River, of wich 85 have been fit up. Two of these pits are located on the premises of the Camping du Gouffre for the pleasure of the vacationers that stay there.
