RESULTS RACES

The first edition of the Daaquam River International Dog Sled Race was held on a beautiful winter’s day on January 7^th and 8^th 2006. This first event was a great success totalling 114 inscriptions.

The program consisted of a 10 mile race made up of 39 Mushers who signed up, a 6 mile race involving 57 Mushers as well as a new 1 kilometre sprint that attracted 18 Mushers. A total of 114 teams participated in these different competitions where the cash prizes totalled $8000, making this first edition the second most important race in the province of Quebec due to the number of competitors.

The competitors were for the most part Canadian, such as Mushers from Quebec, New Brunswick and Ontario, as well as a dozen Mushers from New Hampshire and Vermont.

The winners of the 10 mile race are as follows:

• 1^st place Claude Bellerive from Charette, Quebec
• 2^nd place Real Turmel from St-Augustin, Quebec
• 3^rd place Marcel Desaulnier from St-Étienne, Quebec

The winners of the 6 mile race are as follows:

• 1^st place Lou Cerret from Markstay, Ontario
• 2^nd place Madeleine Leblond from St-Honoré de Chicoutimi, Quebec
• 3^rd place Mélanie Bellerive from Charette, Quebec

The winners of the 1 kilometre sprint are as follows:

• 1^st place Cédric Laroche from St-Raphaël, Québec
• 2^nd place Marc Antoine Therrien from St-Émile, Quebec
• 3^rd place Madeleine Leblond from St-Honoré de Chicoutimi, Quebec

Approximately one thousand spectators attended the grand display delivered by the Mushers on the magnificent frozen Daaquam River, and more than 900 dogs along with all their racing equipment.

This was an outstanding event to start off the New Year well. We hope to see you next year for the second edition of the Daaquam River International Dog Sled Race which will be held on January 6^th and 7^th. Don’t miss it, you won’t be disappointed!
