Just a bridge away from Montreal,
the Monteregie is an original and captivating region.

The Monteregie is bordered to the North by the Saint-Lawrence River and the Island of Montreal; to the East by the tourist region of Eastern Townships and the Centre du Quebec; to the South by the United-States and to the West by Ontario and the tourist region of Outaouais. Five bridges and a tunnel link the Monteregie to the island of Montreal. Monteregie is subdivided into six tourist sub-regions due to the size of the territory.

The region is also the host to an important festival of hot-air balloons and to the Valleyfield international speed boat race.

Military History

An important page of history occured in this region, more precisely in La Vallée du Richelieu or «Vallée des forts». You will discover a series of fortifications built by the British and French settlers.
Fort-Chambly is spectacular. It was built in 1665 to ensure the protection of Montreal against Iroquois attacks. The historical sites and their interpretation centers will explain the reasons for the defeat to the British, and why in 1837, the Patriots rebelled against the British government troops and much more!

The region has an abundance of streams that favor water sports of all kinds 
Île Perrot as well as cruises. The main rivers of the region are: Chateauguay, Richelieu, Saint-François and Yamaska. The lakes of Champlain, Deux-Montagnes, Saint-François, Saint-Louis and Saint-Pierre add pleasure to the area.

All this water is an important potential source of hydro-electric energy. As a result, power stations were built such as the one in Beauharnois, which is among the biggest hydro-electric power plants in the world. THIS IMMENSE TERRITORY OF 11,074 km2 IS HOME TO THE LARGEST IMPORTANT NUMBER OF APPLE GROWERS IN QUEBEC. Saint-Hyacinthe is the agricultural capital of Quebec. It's the home to many great scientific institutions related to the region. Wine making is also well represented with its 150,000 bottles of wine per year. The Monteregie has an impressive number of « maple sugar farms». Several outfitters clubs will delight fishing and hunting fans. You can also discover the Monteregie on a cosmos (an unusual aircraft mounted on skis, floaters or wheels). Biking is also popular. A «Carte-Vélo» is available for those wishing to take the time to admire the scenery. Different cruises are also available, to discover another facet of Monteregie. Finally, hiking and horseback riding are sure to thrill you.
