History

It all started in 1879 when Joseph Denis came to Saint-Ubalde, which was founded on December 24, 1872.

He married Élisabeth Matte in 1865, they decided to acquire a piece of land bordering North-South and running through the village of Saint-Ubalde. To help their children get established, they gave to each one, a piece of the land to build their house.

« In honor of the captain »

Joseph's son, Alfred, married to Virginie Chavigny de Lachevrotière, became the settler of the land and the builder of "La Maison Denis". He was nicknamed "Captain Garibaldi". But why?

In order to unify Italy, Italian patriots fight against Papacy. Pope Pius IX wants to defend the churchties and on his request, an armed corps of pontifical zouavex is formed made up of volunteers. First recruited in France and Belgium, they are joined by other volunteers all over Europe. America wants to respont to the need and young recruits, eager to serve their Church, are gathered in Québec and Alfred Denis became "Captain" of one of these groups. But the hostilities cease and no one went to Rome to serve the Church.

A few years passed and, Jean-Baptiste Denis, the son, became the owner of the house. He in turn passed it on to his son, Joseph, who then sold it to his cousin Rosaire.

In 1937, Rosaire Denis, great-grand son of Joseph became the new owner of the house. With his wife, Octavie, he continued operating the dairy-farm. As the years went by, they converted the cellar into a dairy which gave it an important status in the village.

In 1944, after Rosaire passed away, his wife Octavie sold the land and the house to her son Damien while keeping residential rights until her death. Damien and his wife, Noëlla, had 9 children, all born in that house.

When all their children had left, Damien and Noëlla found the house too big for them so they traded homes with Fabien who will be the last descendant of the "Denis" family to own the house.

Finally, in september 1995, Mesdames Céline and Nancy Gingras take possession of the house and convert it into an Inn retaining its aspect and history. Since 2001, La Maison Denis is available as a B&B (rooms and breakfast) or for private rental for small group up to 12 persons.

Located in the center of the village, you will discover a typical "Quebecois Auberge" with a warm setting.
